about

Whyever did I make this twice as long as it ought to be?

lyrics

My only love and I
went walking in the evening—
on a brilliant night with stars all through the air.
She looked me in the eye
and asked if I truly loved her
for if so then she’d a secret that she’d share.

I swear I did not lie
when I told her that I loved her
and her secret she could safe entrust to me.
She said, “Then close your eyes—
keep them shut until I tell you.
When you open them a wonder you will see.”

But I didn’t see her face ‘round here this morning
I was calling out her name all afternoon
Now the pale moon shines down upon her absence
And the wind and I cry out a mournful tune.

She said “Open your eyes,”
and I did so with great wonder
for the light to me seemed brighter than the sun;
for shining in the sky
a band of fire now was floating
and I heard my love say, “Yes, he is the one.”

She took it from the sky
and placed it on my finger
said she’d be there when I called her name.
“My love for you will buy
you the favor of the heavens
and this ring will make you master of the same.”

“Tomorrow say goodbye
to all the others that you care for
and when nighttime comes again, this world we’ll leave.”
So through the day I tried
to put my life so far behind me
but I thought of much I’d miss t’would make me grieve.

I looked her in the eye
and said that I didn’t need her—
watched her vanish; sent her back to whence she came.
I wonder why I cry
and start sucking on my finger—
lost her ring, but sometimes I still call her name.

No, I won’t see her face ‘round here this morning
I’ll be calling out her name all afternoon
Then the pale moon will shine down upon my foolish, foolish heart
As the wind and I cry out a mournful tune.
